Summer Skin Tips

Once again, winter has faded into Spring and Spring has burst into Summer along with Summer skin. Next comes the invincible Summer sun, your skin's arch-enemy, particularly if you play or exercise outdoors.

Most people know that using sunscreen protection is essential. There are a number of ways to promote a healthy glow without exposing your skin to harmful rays. To help avoid Summer skin when playing or exercising outdoors on a hot, sunny day here are a few tips.

Lightweight and light colored clothing combined with plenty of sunscreen protection on exposed and unexposed skin is a good way to protect yourself.

If overheating isn't a concern, dark colored, tightly woven clothing is more effective at blocking UV rays. Light colored clothing lets the sun and UV rays reach the skin more easily.

Another barrier against sun damage comes in the form of eyewear. Protect not only your eyes, but also the skin around them by wearing sunglasses that block 90 percent to 100 percent of the sun's UV rays.

Always wear a hat. Though a cap may be more comfortable for jogging, try a wide brimmed hat that will shade your neck and face while gardening or walking outside.

Now that you know how to protect the skin's surface, it's time to start thinking about what you can do to make a healthy glow from the inside out. You're already off to a good start with some form of exercise, which gets the blood circulating and delivers fresh oxygen to the skin all over your body.

The next step is to drink plenty of water. Outdoor play or exercise, especially in the Summer, increases your risk of dehydration. This is one risk you don't want to take since it not only affects your performance and robs your skin of vitality, but also may be potentially hazardous to your health.

Be sure to drink fluids before, during and after physical activity. To replenish your fluids after any outdoor activity, weigh yourself before you participate and then weigh again after. Any weight you lost is water and should be replaced by drinking two glasses (16 ounces) of water for every pound you have lost.

Summer is a time for sun, fun and physical activity. Sipping on a cool drink, participating in your favorite activity and enjoying the long days of summer. No matter what you like to do, with a little insight and these few tips you can help alleviate the effects of Summer skin and make your Summer one you will enjoy.

Learning The Basics Of Tanning Salons

Tanning salons are everywhere that you look. Most towns, even the very small ones, have at least one place where people can go for indoor tanning. This is not just a woman thing either. Many men are now electing to get rid of the lily white skin in favor of the tanned look.

Everyone has their own reason for wanting to be tanned. It may be that they want to appear slimmer or they'll be taking a vacation and want to get a head start on their beach tanning. Whatever the reasons, there are some things to keep in mind.

Tanning salons in small areas are usually combined with another business, because the owners or operators know when to take advantage of a good thing. It may not be good for your skin but it is good for their wallet.

If they can get you to come inside for the sun tanning session, then they can influence you to purchase a product or vice versa. Another huge area of profit is the outrageous prices for its lotions.

If you decide to check into the salons in your area, then you need to know a few basics before signing up for a membership. The first is that not all salons are alike. That small video store probably does not have the money to spend on one of the newer tanning beds.

They may be using a model that is twenty years old and not as safe as the beds found in larger salons. You may get a cheaper membership price, but it may not balance out in the long run. Always inspect the beds before you sign any papers.

Tanning salons are going to smell like a gym locker room. It simply cannot be helped. Anytime you have people locked away in hot boxes, they are going to sweat and leave behind a body odor.

If the smell seems beyond the norm, then you may want to choose another location because it can mean that they are not cleaning the rooms and machines properly. You can take matters into your own hands and feel safer by carrying antibacterial wipes to clean the machine before and after usage.

There is more to tanning salons than you might think. Most salons now offer the option of using their self tanning lotion. The fake tans are sprayed on by a machine. You do not have to worry about streaking or having splotchy skin.

The spray on tans last longer than the typical self tanning lotions and are a really good deal. You will have to pay a bit extra, but it is well worth the cost.

Beauty Of Tanned Skin - What Is The Cost?

Tanned skin is loved by most of the white skinned people. Who will say that he/she does not like tanned skin? What about the cost of getting tanned skin? I am not talking in term of dollars, but life. It is death due to skin cancer. There are many ideas about tanning that people believe and think that they are safe. Let us talk about them.

Many of us believe that use of tanning oils on skin and then getting tanned is safe. But that is not true. No tanning oil prevents the sun. If it had prevented sun, you would not have got tanned! Tanning skin is only due to the UV radiation and radiation damages and causes skin cancer.

A swim after tanning skin protects the skin. This is another belief of many people. Please note that no amount of swimming after getting tanned saves the skin. Once the skin gets tanned, it is damaged. Swimming without application of a sunscreen is very bad because water reflects more UV radiation. The radiation near the beach is more than on the ground away from beach.

Skin that is tanned is in danger. Protect your life by avoiding all types of tanning. Use tanning cosmetics to get artificial color if you want, but don’t damage your skin with tan. Tanning beds, sun lamps and sun all are bad for skin.

Mineral Makeup and Bismuth Oxychloride

Mineral makeup is becoming ever popular as we become more and more conscious of what we are putting onto our skin and bodies. Because of this increased awareness people are asking more questions. And one of the most popular questions is about the ingredient bismuth oxychloride. Women want to know what it is and why it is in so many brands of mineral cosmetics.

There are a lot of almost facts and half- truths flying around out there. In this article we'll learn what bismuth oxychloride is, where it comes from, why it is used, and if makeup with it as an ingredient is a good choice for you.

Bismuth is the by-product of lead and copper refining, as well as other metals to a smaller degree. Bismuth occurs very rarely in nature. It is on the periodic table of elements under the symbol Bi at atomic number 83. It is very heavy and chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. It has a whitish/iridescent hue and has a very high shine property to it. Of all the heavy metals it is the only non-toxic. Bimsuth is a carrier for fuel in nuclear reactors. Bismuth components are used in everything from detection work, to making acrylic fibers, to safety devices in fire detection and extinguishing items, soldering, magnets and medicine as well as cosmetics. Because it is a by-product of lead refining, bismuth oxychloride should be lead free when companies begin using it in their cosmetics.

Companies use this in their cosmetics because it is cheap to buy and is an inexpensive filler. It does have binding qualities, so the makeup will "stick" to your skin, so to speak. There are other products that are just as effective at adhesion, and are better for your skin. Because of its molecular make up, it is often viewed as shiny or pearlescent. It is often sold in these two varieties. This makes it highly refractive, which is something companies want. Refraction will camouflage fine lines, wrinkles and discolorations. If you use a brand with bismuth oxychloride you'll notice a shiny look after applying the makeup. Not like oiliness, but almost shimmery. That's the bismuth oxychloride.

It's a very heavy element, which makes it difficult for many people to wear. It has to be forced into the pores (hence the buffing technique) otherwise it is capable of sliding off the wearer's face. The heaviness can result in clogged pores or irritated skin. Bismuth oxychloride often feels silky and not rough when rubbed between the fingers. Mineral makeup companies that do not use it have a lighter feeling makeup that usually blends into the skin better and with less effort.

Its molecular makeup is a crystalline shape, which may be a cause of the itchiness some women get when they wear it. Many women experience noticeable itching when they sweat. Don't forget it is also kin to arsenic, chemically. Your body will reject things it does not like, and if you'll get sick from ingesting arsenic, it would make sense that your skin would get irritated from having arsenic forced into it.

So, if you find you're experiencing some problems with your current mineral makeup and it contains bismuth oxychloride, you may want to consider switching brands. Many women experience skin irritation when using mineral makeup and don't know why. It's likely that bismuth oxychloride is the reason.

70's Make Up And Fashion

Make up styles and fashion continue to evolve and change with each decade creating it's own style of make up techniques and clothing that sets it apart from previous years. The 1970's era was no different, perhaps being the first time that allowed women to work out for themselves what wasn't comfortable or was.

Mini-skirts, maxi-skirts or hot pants formed part of a woman's closet and she wore them when she wanted to. Evening wear consisted of a halter top with evening trousers or maxi-skirt. Empire line dresses were very popular in a mini-skirt style or a more traditional knee length (midi - length).

The 1970's era was characterized by an almost anything goes approach with styles ranging from clunky to soft and feminine. It was a turbulent time during which feminists protested, with the Vietnam War and Watergate Scandal hot topics in the media together with global pollution fears. These events inspired fashion designers to design cutting edge, as well as more comforting items.

Fashion changes affected both women and men. Nike, founded in 1972, made a strong start despite the athletic craze not being big, but running shoes became essential additions to women's and men's closets as more people began running. Men began borrowing women's clothing and took to wearing make up and using clear polish on their nails. Blouses, Boas, and slinky shirts became the in thing for celebrities in the music and television scenes.

Hair styles popularized by Farrah Fawcett, were straight and long, parted slightly to one side with wings and needed hours with a straightening iron, curling iron, mouse, and spray. Any outdoor or athletic activity would ruin the hair style. However, Afro perms were also the in thing and needed only an air dry and a pick to fluff them.

Disco became popular and the fashion style of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever swept the nation by storm and made it's exit just as quickly, perhaps because skin tight pants, slinky shirts and platform shoes were so uncomfortable.

Make up was soft, fresh and natural looking and women who wanted sun tanned looks without exposure to harmful sunrays, used fake tans and bronzers. Foundation was seldom used, but when it was no powder was applied, leaving a shimmer or sheen to the skin while lipstick, blush and eye shadows were natural colors with a bit of shimmer.

Lip liner, mascara and caked on foundations did not feature while eye shadows that shimmered, muted blush, and frosted lipstick were the mainstays of a 70's woman on the go.

Beauty Tips for Luscious Lips

The last step in your makeup regime is lipstick application. Some women say if they could have only one beauty item it would be lipstick. Lip color brings the whole look together to create harmony. To keep your lips looking perfect, have lip color with you at all times and reapply when needed.

When you select a lip color take in consideration your clothing and blush colors. The color of your clothing and blush should complement your lipstick but doesn’t have to be perfectly matched. However, the colors should be in the same intensity and range. Wear cool colors together and warm colors together. Pink lipsticks go with blue and pink colors and corals and russets go with clothing that falls in a yellow/orange range.

Steps to apply lip color:

1. Prepare your lips by applying foundation over them (this will extend the wear).

2. Outline and define the shape using a lip pencil that has soft, pointed top. Start at the V in your upper lip drawing down to the corners. Then, starting at the middle of the bottom lip draw a line to the corners. To help lipstick stay on longer, use your pencil to cover the lips entirely.

3. Fill in upper lip with lipstick or you can use a lip brush.

4. Fill in the lower lip and then blot with a tissue and reapply.

5. Dab gloss in the centre of your lower lip to create a fuller more glamorous look.

When defining the lips with a lip pencil be sure the pencil and lipstick colors are very close. The lip liner should not be noticeable. Lip liners are meant to keep your lipstick in place, keep lipstick from bleeding, define the shape and help them look more natural. Do not try to change the shape of your lips by going outside the natural line.

* Dark lipsticks will make small lips appear smaller.

How To Apply Eye Makeup

The same basic steps are used when you apply eye makeup, whether you go for nude makeup or the seductive, smoky eye look. You change your look by your choice of colors. Go for natural colors, close your your skin tones for that nude makeup look, something rosier if you want to look radiant, something more golden, or with metallics if you want glamour, or darker, smoky colors for the smoky eye look.

Decide on your look. Pick three colors for your eyeshadow.

A light shade for the highlights. This could be a pearl-like shimmer, a very light metallic, or simply a very pale color.
A medium shade which would be the main color you would use.
A dark shade for the shadows.

Applying the eye makeup

  • Apply your foundation first over your entire face before you start on your eye makeup. You need a good canvas to work with.

  • Apply an eyeshadow primer from lash to brow to make your eye makeup last. You can skip this step if you prefer.

  • Using a makeup brush or eyeshadow sponge, apply the medium shade from lashes to the crease of your eyelid.

  • Draw a line as close to your upper lashes as possible with your eyeliner, from inner corner, to the outer corner of your eye. For smoky eyes, draw a thick line. Use an eye pencil to darken your lower lash line as well.

  • Using the edge for your eyeshadow brush, or with an eyeliner brush, go over this lash line with the dark eyeshadow.

  • Apply the dark eyeshadow into the crease of your eyelid to deepen your eyes.

  • Use the light color on the brow bone to highlight your eyes.

  • Apply the light shadow from lash to crease at the center of your eyelid.

  • Go over the entire eyelid lightly with a large brush to blend the colors.

  • Apply mascara on your upper and lower lashes

Eyes speak volumes when it comes to beauty and make up. Therefore, a perfect eye make up can work wonders in accentuating the beauty and expression of the eyes and contribute to the overall appeal. As the name suggests, eye make up concealer typically conceals the blemishes of the skin around the eye and works as a base foundation at the same time. The formulation of an eye make up concealer is denser than the regular foundations and if applied properly produces a perfect and flawless complexion. They are available in creams, tubes, and sticks, and are rich in vitamins that help not only in lightening the skin tone but also in evening out the skin texture. The best concealer is supposed to be the one that is not soluble in water.

Just as the eye shadow, it is also essential for a concealer to match with the skin complexion and needs to be applied inside the nose-bridge and outer corners of the eyes. The concealer is required to be spread over the area gently so that it does not come into the grooves of the fine lines around the eye, which might cause an unnatural effect because of the congealing nature of a concealer. To test the suitability of the concealer according to the skin tone, individuals can apply some on the blue veins of the hands and if the vein is no longer seen, it proves that the concealer is ideal for the individual. Mixing the concealer with the foundation or an eye cream can further help in blending the make up colors and reflect a smooth skin.

Eye Make Up Color

With a host of beauty and make up products flocking the market, it becomes difficult to choose the right color for an eye make up. However, it is important to remember eye make up colors can be chosen according to the individuals' eye color and the grandeur of the occasion. Individuals need to understand that the eyelids have a darker shade than the rest of the face and can be oily in some cases that might lend a blotchy look to the color when applied on them. Deeply set eyes might hide the true color when the eyes are open. It is essential to clean the eye area properly and use concealer to hide the flaws of the entire eyelid. Application of loose powder would instantly make the area bright and control excessive oil. Highlighting the brow bones can then help in accentuating deeply set eyes.

Once the basic make up is complete, an appropriate make up color can be matched with the dress and eye color. Brown and rose shadows can compliment blue eyes very well providing a warm contrast to the cool blue eye color. Individuals with brown eyes can try gold and green shades preferable with a glittery texture. Green eyes go well with lavender and mocha shades giving a dramatic look and natural effect. While mocha can be ideal for day make up, lavender can light up the night occasions. Pale yellow and deep green are the shades of hazel eyes matching perfectly with the flecks of the eyes. Apart from these specific shades, the universal eyeliner colors that are used by everybody are chocolate, charcoal, and black for complementing any kind of eye shadow.

It is important to use lighter shades on the brow bones and darker ones on the eyelids to bring out the best effects. Eye glosses are the most recent trends of eye make up and add shimmer and shine to the applied colors. For applying powder eyeliners, running the brush under cold water and applying it wet on the eyes would provide a more intense color. While black shades provide a classy look, blue counteracts redness. Pink, white, and yellow liners make the eyes look brighter. Simple Bathroom Treatments to Bring an Atmosphere of Spa in Your Home

The idea behind spending time at spas is to help you feel better when you leave than how you did when you arrived. Whether the point of your spa visit is to get a massage to reduce muscle tension or stress brought on by daily life at the grinding stone, getting yourself pampered with a facial that rejuvenates your skin into an incandescent glow reminiscent of youth, or receiving a manicure and pedicure that softens the skin on your hands and feet to make you look and feel incredibly soft and groomed, a spa visit indeed helps to relax you and to make you feel happy. This article will look at the different ways to revamp your own bathroom to make it closely resemble and feel like a spa.

Creating a soothing atmosphere of peace, relaxation and wellbeing in your bathroom using decor accessories can well be achieved without having to incur expense with renovating your entire bathroom. Simple tricks of the trade like towel racks, mirrors, soaps, toiletries and 3D kinetic pictures that produce sound can be deployed to infuse a world of difference into the one room in your home that can be quickly turned into a place of relaxation and pamper without the need to even employ a message therapist, manicurists and such like.

And now I'm going to throw a few design ideas for your home's bathroom at you, that can help you get started with creating an ambiance that closely resembles that of a spa.

Graceful looking towel racks that are large enough to hold body sheet type bath towels--providing they don't make your bathroom look crowded--are a great way to begin transforming your bathroom. And if your towel rack is of Wrought iron and with perhaps a shelf on the top, a display of scented aroma therapy candles and potpourri can add a feeling of spa to the room. Throwing in some bath items like soaps and body lotions can make a pretty delightful display in the bathroom when neatly arranged inside a wicker basket, or in the case of soap, perhaps unwrapped and stored in a large, pretty, clear glass jar. And if you rolled towels and washcloths--instead of merely folding them-in a large flat basket you could easily create a focal point that is esthetically pleasing.

To add charisma and a personal touch, consider using antiques to create charming storage. When painted the same color as the bathroom walls, especially, an old three-drawer chest or freestanding repurposed jam cupboard can hold hair dryers, curlers, cosmetics and other personal effects to give an overall effect that says "personal". If you have ample natural light to allow them to grow, Green plants can increase a sense of wellbeing as they do look great anywhere. On your bathroom walls, consider hanging kinetic pictures of cascading waterfalls that emit the sound of trickling water. Pictures-in-motion will in more ways than one contribute to the serenity of the outdoors indoors in the absence of natural light in the room.

Use bath salts and body oils. Do not deny yourself these pleasures. You do deserve the feel good benefits that scented bath salts, botanicals, and body lotions and oils provide. Pamper yourself daily! Spa treatment products you enjoy at spas are oftentimes available for purchase for home use as well. Why not bring that luxurious spa feeling into your home?

The personal touches and ambiance--as is the case with spas you visit--help make the experience all the more special and memorable. Your own home bathroom is no different. Incorporate the items you love, and pieces of furniture that add to that spa feeling and you can't go wrong.

At Home Spa Treatments For Less

Do you spend thousands of dollars at a spa salon? Well, now you can have an in home spa for less. Spa yourself at home with facials, hands and feet scrubs, and body scrubs.

To start with a facial, you can use cucumbers for that natural treatment. Place a slice of cucumber over each eye for about 10 minutes. If you have puffy eyes, you can place a cold cloth or ice cubes over your eyes to help reduce the puffiness. Or you can use nourishing eye pads. The pads are cool to reduce the puffiness, soothe away irritation, refresh, and revitalize the eye area in just a few minutes. You can also place the pads in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

For an in-home facial, you can use a face masque. There are many masques you can find at a department store, but one of the best masques that I have tried is a self-heating masque. The self-heating masque warms up as you smooth it over your face. You can feel the warmth of the masque instantly, which tells you that the active ingredients are working. Some masques are botanically-enriched with ingredients like vitamins C, D, and also green tea. This type of masque is great for cleansing the skin of dirt, oil, and residue. After you rinse your face, smooth on a face moisturizer for added softness.

While nourishing your tired eyes, you can pamper your body by soaking in a bath full of therapeutic minerals. The minerals will leave your skin feeling soft and silky smooth. Fill your tub with warm water and indulge yourself for about 1/2 an hour or longer. Let you body soak so the minerals can absorb into your skin. You can also use a body scrub to exfoliate the first layer of dead skin. After a relaxing bath, smooth on some moisturizing mineral lotion. The lotion helps relieve tension and restores the moisture that was lost.

If you have very dry skin and need extra moisturizing treatment, you want to use an organic enzyme body masque. This is a moisturizing treatment for those targeted areas that are very dry. Smooth on the dry area and allow the masque to dry for at least five to ten minutes. Once dry, rinse off thoroughly. This treatment is great for dry hands and feet. For added softness, you can smooth on the moisturizing mineral lotion.

Products can range from $10 to up to $50, but it is surely less expensive than a trip to the spa salon. One facial can cost over $60 an hour, not including tip. You know you are getting a good deal when you can give yourself a home spa treatment over and over. These do-it-yourself target=_new home spa treatments will leave you feeling refreshed, clean, and silky smooth.

Tips to Choosing a Tanning or Sunscreen Agent

Remember the days of ordering a coffee at your favourite cafĂ© -when your most difficult decision was to choose between an espresso, a cappuccino or a flat white? Today of course, your choices are much more diverse – throw in Affogattos, Machhiatos, Viennas, Melloccinos, and Mochas (to name but a few). Of course, your choices don’t end there. Will that be with skim milk or whole? Decaf or regular? In a mug or a cup...?

Now of course that’s just a simple example using coffee. But how do you feel about your choices when it comes to selecting a tanning or sunscreen agent?

Not surprisingly, when faced with the variety and range of products on the market today, the average consumer can find this selection process a little more overwhelming than ordering a cup of coffee.

Tanning products or sunscreen agents are not only available in multiple forms including sprays, lotions, sticks, gels etc.: they can also be targeted to different activities, age ranges and skin types. They are produced by both smaller (less familiar) manufacturers, as well as by the more popular brand name manufacturers such as ‘Banana Boat', 'ChapStick', 'Clarins', ‘Clinique’, ‘Coppertone’, ‘Estee Lauder’, ‘Johnson’s’, ‘Neutrogena’, ‘Oil of Olay’, and ‘Vaseline’.

In response to the demands of consumers, manufacturers continue to provide an ever increasing number of products for you to choose from, with many targeted to specific markets. However, the variety of choices doesn’t mean it makes the selection process easy.

So where on earth do you start?

Besides your skin type, here are some simple tips to consider when making your selection from the variety of tanning and sunscreen products available:

a) Chosen Activity: – Being outdoors is not the only element to take into consideration when factoring in your amount of exposure to the sun. You also need to note the intensity with regards to climate, the season, location and time of day.

For example, just because you may be hiking in a cool mountain region or snow skiing, doesn’t mean you should throw all caution aside. Wind and UV rays still reach you, so protection would be wise. Consider also any exposure to surfaces with reflective qualities (i.e. snow, water, sand, etc.), as these can intensify UV ray harm. Activities that make you work up a sweat or those involving water (e.g. basketball, jogging, sun bathing on a hot beach, biking, water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing, outdoor work and exercise etc.), have the potential to wash off your sunscreen, and therefore need to be addressed also.

Choose a sunscreen product for these activities with both UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of 15 or higher, when possible. As for water / sweat activities, choose a product that offers a waterproof or water-resistant agent.

Tip: Where appropriate, you should also consider dressing to cover up as much skin as possible (e.g. wearing long sleeves, a scarf or hat, slacks or jogging pants).

b) Age: – There are only a few words of caution about age. First of all, health care providers do NOT recommend using alcohol-based sunscreen products on children. And they do NOT recommend using sunscreen agents of any type on babies under the age of 6 months. For children older than 6 months, a lotion is the preferred form of sunscreen, over a spray, for example. And the SPF should be a minimum of 15.

c) Use on Your Body: – Your choice of tanning product also depends upon where you are going to apply the lotion, gel, spray or other form. And it also depends upon the health of the area of the body.

For example, there are lip balms with sunscreen (solid or gel-based ones), which not only help the lips, but can also touch up spots in a hurry. Also if you’re trying to apply protection to fingers, ears, nose and other small areas, a physical sunscreen agent, lotion or gel may be easier than a spray. If you have dry skin, you might want to try a product in lotion or cream form. For oily skin, gel-based or alcohol forms of sunscreen might be better choices. N.B: A word of caution: Do not use alcohol-based products with inflamed skin or eczematous.

Keeping the above considerations in mind, should give you a great starting point from which to choose your tanning product or sunscreen agent.

In addition, a recommendation from a friend for a particular product, (assuming they have similar skin type and circumstances), - or even a particular brand name (remembering that the more popular manufacturers produce products catering to different skin types, activities etc.), can sometimes also be helpful in narrowing down your choices.

Ultimately the choice should be based upon your individual situation, your skin type, and your personal preferences. What works for one person may not be the most ideal for another.

Once you've done some basic research and have found a particular product you feel is suitable, then why not just start with that product. If you find it doesn’t offer you the results you expected, then simply be prepared to do a little more research, look around further and modify your choices accordingly. While there may be some trial and error involved initially, by becoming more familiar with your preferences and the types of products available, you're sure to find the product that’s right for you.

Skin Types, Sunscreen Products & SPF

Whether you’re outdoors for recreational or work purposes, repeated exposure to the sun will have its natural consequences for your skin.

Regardless of color, skin that is repeatedly exposed to the sun tends to become tough and thick. Beyond the middle years of adulthood, the results can include wrinkly, leathery skin.

Irrespective of the circumstances for sun exposure, selecting a sunscreen product that offers some degree of protection from the sun’s UV rays can be one way to protect your skin from these ageing affects.

Due to the variety and range of sunscreen products available, here are some basic factors to consider in making an appropriate selection:

1. Ingredients:

Sunscreen products can be made with ingredients to protect against UVA rays, and / or other ingredients to protect against UVB rays (which are in fact more harmful for sun burning than UVA rays). The best products offer ingredients for protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Consider also the actual ingredient list. (I.e. Are they naturally derived / safe, or do they contain potentially harmful chemicals?).

2. SPF (Sun Protection Factor):

The SPF number on the product’s label refers to the strength of protection, and the length of time a sun-screening product will allow your skin to be in the sun without burning - relative to the length of time bare skin (or skin without the product applied) would burn or redden.

To sum that up, the SPF number tells people how much longer they can last out in the sun with protection for their skin, without being burned. The higher the SPF number, the longer the period of protection against the sun.

For example, let’s say ‘Joe’, a young student, would normally burn after 12 minutes of being out in the sun. He applies a sunscreen, also referred to as a sun block, with an SPF of 15. This means that he should be fine for 15 times his average amount of protection time. In other words, ‘Joe’ would be protected for up to 3 hours. Here’s the formula for calculating:
12 minutes x 15 SPF = 180 minutes (3 hours).

(Now if ‘Joe’ applied a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, he’d be protected for up to 6 hours. E.g. 12 minutes X 30 SPF = 360 minutes (6 hours)).

3. Skin Type:

When selecting a sunscreen, it’s important to consider the different skin types and how they react with exposure to the sun.

Young children: For ages 6 months+, consider a product with SPF of 15 or higher to protect against both sun tanning and burning. Also consider a product label that lists protection against both UVA and UVB rays (also known as the "broad-spectrum").

Skin Type - Very Fair: This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 20 to 30.

Skin Type – Fair: This skin type almost always burns easily. Some tanning can occur, although not much. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 12 to 20.

Skin Type – Light: This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 8 to 12.

Skin Type – Medium: This skin type burns in the minimal range. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 4 to 8.

Skin Type – Dark: This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs big time, yielding a dark brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 2 to 4.

Skin Type – Other: This skin type includes people with moles (or whose close blood-relatives have a history of moles), people with skin cancer in their family histories (including melanoma), and people with very fair skin and hair. As this is a high-risk category for health damage from too much UV exposure, consider using sunscreen products with the highest SPF available, combined with light to moderate sun exposure.

Once you’ve selected the most suitable sunscreen product, and regardless of your skin type, apply your sunscreen ‘before’ going out into the sun’s rays. To ensure the best possible UV protection, the sunscreen product should also be spread fairly thick, and in a uniform manner over all areas of the skin that will be exposed to the UV rays.

Whatever your current circumstances and choices are for going out in the sun, taking appropriate care of your skin ‘now’ will help determine a healthier and younger-looking skin in the future.

Sunscreens for the Face - How to Use Sunscreen

According to Dermatologists, the suns ultraviolet light is your skins biggest enemy - which means sunscreen may just be your skins biggest friend. All sunscreen products today block out burn-causing UVB rays; very few adequately block UVA rays. Yet, it is these long, glass-penetrating UVA rays that are responsible for the wrinkles, collagen and elastin breakdown, brown spots, and broken capillaries associated with sun damage. To help your skin, you need a product that is labeled "broad-spectrum," which means it blocks both types of rays. You also need a formula that boasts an SPF of at least 15; with the thinning ozone layer, cautious dermatologists suggest an SPF that is no lower than 30.

Chemical sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens use chemicals that absorb UVA and UVB light, preventing it from damaging surrounding skin cells. There are a lot of chemical ingredients currently used in sunscreen, but only Parsol 1789 blocks out both UVA and UVB effectively. Remember, it's important to block out both skin-ruining UVA and burn-causing UVB rays!

Don't use old sunscreen because these products lose their effectiveness after 1 to 2 years. If you can't find an expiration date and can't remember when you purchased your sunscreen, buy yourself a fresh bottle.

Physical sunscreens

Physical sunscreens are sometimes called sun-blocks because they form a barrier to block the entry of UVA and UVB light. Titanium dioxide, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays, is one of the most popular physical sunscreens - and it is an ingredient in most physical sunscreens. Because it leaves a white, flaky finish, it is best combined with zinc oxide, which is one of the most powerful UVA protectants around. Unlike the thick, white stuff that surfers and lifeguards once wore, today's zinc - which also goes by the names micronized zinc oxide and Z-Cote - is transparent.

How to use sunscreen

When it comes to sunscreen, how you use it is as important as what kind you use. Make sure you use enough sunscreen for the protection you need. Don't rely on moisturizers or makeup that contain sunscreen. These can be additions to your sun protection routine, but it is chemically difficult to blend a strong, broad-spectrum sunscreen into a moisturizer or foundation. You're safer using actual sunscreen as your primary defense against ultraviolet rays. Sunscreen needs a few minutes to meld with your skin before it can do its job. That's why many sunscreen labels suggest applying at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply even if a product says "waterproof," "rub-proof," or "all-day formula." Why? According to some dermatologists, most sun screening agents have a 2-hour span when they're most effective.

Many sunscreens are heavy and greasy, which makes the acne-prone among us tempted to forego sun protection altogether. Experiment with light, oil-free gel formulas instead.

Is Your Sunblock Or Sunscreen Working As Well As You Think It Is?

UV sun protection products have been hot discussion item over the past few years as consumer protection bodies have introduced measures to ensure that information regarding sun screens and sun blocks are clarified.
The difference is in the way they work and the type of UV protection they provide.

Sunblocks - stop UV rays penetrating the skin by adding a layer on the skin surface.

Sunscreens - penetrate to deep layers of the skin and reflect harmful rays.

The key to selecting an effective sun protection product is to understand the ingredients in the products, and how they work based on the activities you engage in.

There are two types of UV that harm your skin:

UVA - damages the inner layers of the skin and causes wrinkles and lines, and skin cancer.

UVB - the most damaging radiation, burns the skin and damages the skin cell DNA, resulting in long term skin disease.

Most sunscreens protect from UVA damage, but only broad spectrum sunscreens protect both from UVA and UVB. These are the ones to look for.Previously, those products that protected from both UVA and UVB were referred to as 'Sunblocks'; and those that protected the skin from UVA, referred to as 'Sunscreens'.

Many consumer bodies around the world are now banning manufacturers from referring to their broad spectrum sun protection products as sun blocks, unless they work in the manner as outlined above.

This has just added confusion to the market for consumers - hence the need to fully understand the ingredients in the products.

UV Sunscreen Ingredients

Overall you are aiming to use a sun protection product that:

  • Blocks both UVA and UVB for at least 2 hours

  • Is waterproof - if required

  • Does not irritate the skin - especially if you have sensitive skin

  • Maintains its effectiveness for the duration

  • Is easy to apply and does not stain clothing.
Key ingredients include:
  • Anthelios -
    SX

  • Avobenzone

  • Helioplex

So next time you slip, slop, slap, take a minute to read the label of your Sunblocks and sunscreens differ considerably in their sun protection. Are you really getting the protection the advertisements claim?

The Sunny Side Of Sunscreen

You cannot go anywhere these days without hearing about it. Sunscreen; put some on! With the threat of skin cancer forever looming in the rays of the sun, sunscreen has become a staple of a good skin care regimen. Along with keeping your skin dirt free and moisturized, you will want to add a layer of protection from damaging UV rays, so you need a good sunscreen.

The confusing factor is that there are so many different sunscreens out there to choose from. When should you put on sunscreen? Is waterproof sunscreen really waterproof? What if your skin is darker? Is it really helping to protect your skin? These are only a few of the questions you may have regarding sunscreen. Now is the time to know the facts.

Most people tend to slather on the sunscreen right before going out into the sun. Nice try, but that is not enough. You need to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outside to romp in the sun. Around 20 minutes later, you should put on a second coat to make sure any spots you have missed have a chance at being covered, as well as making sure your protection is still in place.

If you only have a regular sunscreen (non waterproof or sweat proof), you should reapply at least every two hours of continuous sun exposure. Should you be swimming of constantly sweating, reapply much more frequently. Not only can the wetness help to remove it, but when you dry off with your towel, you will also be wiping off your sunscreen, so put more on once you are finished drying.

A waterproof sunscreen will usually last you for around 80 minutes if you are constantly having fun in the water, so be sure you should reapply frequently just to be sure. There are water resistant sunscreens which will last for half as much time as waterproof sunscreens; around 40 minutes, so reapply when your time is up.

Many people will put sunscreen on the basic areas of the body; arms, legs, torso, and face. They often forget other areas, which can become especially sensitive when burned, such as the ears, back of your neck, tops of your feet, and exposed areas of your scalp. As it can be a little cumbersome to get to some of these places with a typical sunscreen lotion, you can always use a spray or a sunscreen stick.

You may find that some of your cosmetics, such as foundation, contain sunscreen. While this is helpful, the SPF power they contain is not going to be anywhere near as strong as what a typical sunscreen can offer you. Obviously you are not going to apply a nice thick later of foundation. Instead, try a moisturizer that contains a high SPF sunscreen.

Remember that sunscreen does have a shelf life; so that bottle you bought last summer will probably not be as strong as you need it to be today. The ingredients in sunscreens will eventually lose their strength and be of little use to you. If you find that your sunscreen is a different color, drier, or has a different consistency, it is time to buy a new sunscreen and toss out the other one.

People with sensitive skin may have trouble using some sunscreens. These days, chemical-free sunscreens have begun to grace the market shelves. These contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients and the other ingredients they work with can help keep your skin from becoming irritated while still deflecting the rays of the sun.

Even if you have dark skin, you should use sunscreen. People equate sunscreen with protection from sunburn, but it is also necessary to help avoid skin cancer, something people with dark skin can still get even if they do not burn. Keep your skin safe and put on some sunscreen, even if you have no burn worries.

Choosing a sunscreen wisely

Sunscreen should be an essential part of every individual’s beauty care regimen. Every year, more than 1,000,000 skin cancer cases are diagnosed and thousands of skin cancer patients die.

Parents should be especially careful of their children’s skin as skin cancer risk is more serious among children as they spend more time outside. Parents should make sure that they apply sunscreen on children before they go out for sports practice in the evening or even before they go out for a dance class.

Usually, skin cancer occurs due to exposure to too much sunlight. This does not mean that individuals staying in cool climates have lower incidences of skin cancer. That’s why integrating sunscreen into the daily beauty care regimen becomes really important. Care is the key in protecting against this deadly cancer.

The government is also trying to do its best to promote healthy skin. Officials from the health department are conducting talks in schools across the nation to promote the use of sunscreen and to encourage measures to protect students against excessive exposure to the ultraviolet light.

The risks of skin cancer are what prevent a lot of people from getting a tan the natural way. However, tanning on the beach is fine as long as the individual protects his or her skin the proper way.

There are a lot of sunscreens available in the market; individuals need to read through the list of active ingredients of the various products before buying a sunscreen. In general, individuals should buy a sunscreen that protects against both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Individuals should also remember to apply sunscreen every few hours.

To avoid the hassles of natural tanning, a lot of individuals are going for bronzers and sunless tanning products. However, individuals need to remember that these tanning products do not protect them from the harmful rays of the sun. Therefore, they do need to wear a sunscreen at all times.

Sunless tanning also lasts only for a month. So individuals need to apply the products frequently.

Ways to Apply Lipstick – Look Marvelous

LIPSTICK is one of the easiest and quickest ways to transform your appearance. You don't need to co-ordinate your lip colour with your nail polish or wardrobe, but you may want to take into consideration what you are wearing. It is essential to ensure that your lip colour blends with the rest of your make-up look and also complements your skin tone.

Lipstick has been around for about 5000 years! It is the earliest and quickest way to give your face a focus and create an instant splash of colour. To apply lipstick properly, it is important to have the right tools handy for the best application of lip makeup and get the setting right, in sync with the occasion. The first step is to choose the best shade of lipstick according to the skin tone. Like the colors of rainbow, there are shades of virtually every color when it comes to coloring your lips.

Know your lips! This sounds foolish but it's very true. Understand which shades, kinds, and brands your lips prefer. Also take into account what kind of skintone you have. Pale-skinned people look very good with light, glossy colors and perhaps a little blush, moderate-skinned people look good with muted colors (bland pinks and even browns), and dark-skinned people look great with gold browns and even nude pinks. It can vary, however, so find a shade that matches you.

To make applying lipstick easier, rub a small amount of moisturizer on your lips.

Outline the center edge of your upper lip with lip liner. Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips with a lip liner whose color is one shade darker than your lipstick. Start at the center of the upper lip and work outward. Hug the very outer edges to open up thin lips, and line well within the edges to downplay excessively full lips.

But make sure the liner matches the lipstick or gloss. Dark liner and light lips is tacky.

Keep lipstick off your teeth with this trick. This is a trick I learned years ago from my mom. After applying lipstick, take your index finger and pop it in your mouth, then pull it out. The excess lipstick will come off on your finger rather than your teeth.

If you have thin lips, use light shades to make them appear fuller. Define the lip using the neutral lip pencil from slightly beyond your natural lip line and then apply lipstick covering up lip defining line. Another trick is to apply white shadow on center of both lips over lipstick very lightly and spread it gently.

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for your bottom lip. Since there is no "v" in your bottom lip, just start in the center of your bottom lip to begin your outline.

Close your lips and blot with a tissue. Reapply more lipstick with the lipbrush after blotting if you want to increase the wear-time of your lipstick.

Lip gloss is used to add extra shine after applying lipstick. It can be tinted or colorless and you can use it alone or over lipstick. Apply only to the center of your lips since it tends to 'bleed' beyond the lip edges. Lip gloss is not recommended for use on mature skins.

Make your eyes wonderful by Eyebrow stencils

It is also important to understand how to choose, use, and refine stencils to achieve the best effects. Eyebrow Stencils are used to create a perfect shape for your eyebrows. The eyebrow stencil works as an interesting template which gives shape to your eyebrows. Combing the hair through the template will shape the hair and brush it in the direction you want.

The stencil can be used by placing the stencil over the eyebrow hairs. After that use the brush end of the dual comb and use it on the hair back towards the end of the stencil.

Types of Eyebrow Stencils
Celebrity-Inspired Stencils - Celebrities use professional salon technicians to achieve the perfect look, and it is important to consider the celebrity’s hair color, face shape, and facial features to determine whether their eyebrow shape is suitable for you.
Plastic Stencils - The stencils should be thin enough to be used comfortably, and they should be thoroughly cleaned before and after use.
Pre-Waxed Stencils - These are both eyebrow shapes and wax in one; after firmly applying the stencil, it can be used as a waxing strip to automatically remove hair. This may seem efficient, but it does run the risk of removing too many or too few hairs.
Printable Online Stencils - Some beauty and makeup websites offer printable eyebrow stencils suitable for one-time use. One-use stencils are great for trying a new look before purchasing full stencil sets.
Stencil Sets: These stencils come in coordinating packages of 3-4 subtly different stencils.

Tips on Eyebrow Stencils

Choose the stencil that has as much of your natural brow hair inside the eyebrow cutout as possible
Eyebrows which look like the famous celebrity or model can be made using stencil. Perfectly arched eyebrow stencil can be used for this purpose.
There a wide range of varieities in eye brow stencils according to the needs of facial feature and eyebrow shaping which suit the customer. Each brand has minor differences in them which should be understood clearly before making a choice
Before printing the stencils care should be taken not to adjust the size or proportions of stencil which will distort the desired look.
Eyebrow stencils can be purchased in a number of places.
Fine salons that supply cosmetics frequently offer stencils as well, along with department stores and drug stores that have beauty counters.
Online stores have a wide selection of brow stencils, as do cosmetology supply stores.

How to get best Hair Bleach?

Hair Bleach is a preparation which lightens the hair by removing the pigmentation. The bleach reacts with the melanin in hair, removing the color in an irreversible chemical reaction. The bleaching chemicals break down the melanin and replaces it with the new color represented by the accompanying tinting agent. Depending on how dark your hair is naturally, your underlying pigment could range from rusty orange to pale yellow. Strongly bleached hair looks yellowish, because keratin itself is naturally pale yellow. This natural color is the reason why an elderly person's white hair looks slightly yellow at the roots. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most common lightening agents. The peroxide is used in an alkaline solution, which opens the hair shaft to allow the peroxide to react with the melanin. Tints are added to bleaching solutions to achieve a more pleasing shade to the lightened hair.

Before you start you will need:

A clean towel (one that you don't care if it gets bleach on it),
a plastic or glass bowl,
scissors
a stop-watch or timer.
You will also want to wear a shirt that you don't mind if it gets bleach on it.
Last but not least, of course you'll need your Hot Topic Bleach Kit.
Typically, a box bleach costs around $10. you might need more than one kit though.

There are certain physical consequences to bleaching your hair, foremost of which is severe cortical damage. Breakage, split ends, and frizziness await you and will require constant corrective attention. Also, your hair will lose its ability to hold pigment. Whether you want to add lowlights or try another color entirely, you will enjoy only temporary success. The color will come out over a couple of washings. You will have to wait for your hair to grow back out, in the meantime suffering the embarassment of the reverse-skunk look. Not very appealing.

If you've dyed your hair before, you don't have to test it. It will turn blonde if you have dark hair, but it'll take a while, and you should leave it on for about an hour if you want it to lighten significantly. (To get my black hair to blonde, it took me two hours, but you should never leave bleach on for more than an hour. Wash it out, and do it again if it's not light enough.) You just put it on like dye and wait a while. And your hair will get lighter. You may need a toner because it will most likely turn orange (or greenish, depending on yor undertones), so you shoul get some sort of toner or dye to cover it, other than that, you'll be fine.

Close your bleach powder up tight for storage. Air causes the powder to oxidate and lose its effectiveness. Double protection inside a plastic bag, then inside a plastic tub is a good idea to keep it fresh and ready for action.

A person with straight hair will surely want to get it curled. So try to make changes to your hair in the most kindly way.

3. Maintain your hair with pride and consistency. Depending on the length and style, have it trimmed appropriately. If you wear your hair short, have the style refreshed every 3-4 weeks. If you are growing your hair longer, have it trimmed every 6-8 weeks to remove split ends.

Cosmetics information in caring your skin

Caring for our skin is the most important to keep our body more beautiful and younger. We have all found at some time in our lives seen our skin looking less than good and it is at times like these when we are prone to reach for the products which we will hope reverse the situation, such as foundation, concealer or powder. In fact more and more women are relying on products such as these to cover up the flaws that we do not want other people to see. But although cosmetics are great as a temporary fix and are superb for enhancing our best features, but depending on the type of cosmetics you are using to cover up these problems, you could actually be making them worse rather than better.

Many women are now finding that they are suffering from a problem called cosmetic acne which because they are using cosmetics regularly think they are trying to hide blemishes with it, when it is in fact the product that is causing them. It is easy to tell if your acne has been triggered by either a chemical or topic agent as they look different from those caused by genetic or hormonal problems (often look like red bumps and pustules). However, cosmetic acne is more like a rash and is generally made up of tiny pink or flesh colored bumps on the skin. They can also appear any where that you apply cosmetics to your skin, such as the forehead, cheeks, chin or nose; you may even find some on your neck.

The problem is that a lot of people mistake this form of acne for chronic low grade acne which normally requires treatment using topical creams or antibiotics so they are tempted to cover up the problem even more with more cosmetics. By applying more cosmetic products to the skin they end up creating a more persistent and more notable rash in the future. It is very important that women around the world recognize that this is not a true form of acne, which are normally caused by internal factors of the body and this form of acne is about what you are actually applying to your skin, and it therefore requires a different form of treatment compared to chronic acne.

If you want to get rid of this form of acne quickly and easily, then the simplest way of doing this is to stop using cosmetics. You will find that the acne will have cleared up with a few weeks once you have stopped using the offending products. However, it does not mean that you can not use any cosmetics at all if you suffer from this, it just means that the one’s that have caused it should no longer be used. It is best if you choose products that do not contain oils or look for ones that are marked “non-comedogenic”. This type of product supposed to be less likely to clog up the pores of your skin which results in your getting this form of acne. Whenever possible avoid using heavy, thick or greasy substances, and don’t be afraid to wear no make up at all, (just because you imagine you have all these terrible flaws, to other people there are hardly noticeable).

In fact it is good to let your skin breathe once in a while. If you happen to notice only isolated break outs of this form of acne along your hairline or on other parts of your body, then it is advisable that you take a good hard look at the various creams, soaps, shampoos and other substances you are using on your skin in order to find out what is causing the outbreak. It may be the conditioner you are using on your hair is too heavy and is clogging up the pores around your scalp or even on your neck and back (this is especially true of people with long hair where it is able to touch the skin). It might be an idea to use a lighter formula or being extra vigilant and ensuring that your hair no longer touches your skin. However if it is the soap that you are using for your body seems to be the problem, then it is a good idea to change to one which offers extra exfoliation which will help to keep the skins pores clean.

It might be worth considering a product that contains an acne-fighting ingredient such as salicylic acid in it, which gets rid of dead skin cells and prevents the pores from become clogged. Finally you should always remember that what ever you apply to your skin is also wreaking havoc on your complexion, so it may be sometimes that you need to change what you are actually using. So for example you scrub your skin too hard when applying facial soap, this can encourage your skin to produce more oil, which can lead to out breaks of acne. Also if you regularly rinse using hot water rather than luke warm this can also promote outbreaks of acne, so it is best if your keep your sink, bath and shower water at a comfortable and not too hot (steamy) temperature. Also never ever dip your fingers directly into your pots of foundation or apply concealer a wand directly on to blemished skin, doing this allows the oil on your fingers and bacteria to take up residence in your cosmetics. So remember that next time when you use your foundation or concealer after doing this you are at risk of spreading acne on to your nice fresh clean skin. So where at all possible, make a point of using disposable cosmetic sponges, q-tips and tissues to keep your cosmetics in a pristine condition. However, if you do use cosmetic brushes then make sure you clean them regularly. Ensure any make that has been sat in your cabinets or on your dressing tables for extended periods of time without being used are thrown out and ensure that all products you use on your skin are free from any potential hazards.
